Alabama-West Florida

Welcome to the Alabama-West Florida Civitan District
Governor's Update
We are well into the second quarter of the 2009-10 Civitan year and I hope you are planning a Recruitment Meeting for your Club, if you haven't done so already. Our District member numbers are still down a little, but I know with your leadership and upcoming recruitment meetings we will grow our clubs and District! So if you have been on the sidelines in pre-game prep, sharpening your leadership skills, and waiting for the "battle" to start, now is the time to take charge and lead your Club to a distinguished and Honor Club year. I need your support and leadership!

As of the last club status report, 10 of our clubs have deleted more members than added and no Club has an increase in membership. So let's get "fired up" and "Rock Our District" and help as "Civitan Rocks Our World" the remainder of the 2009-2010 Civitan Year. I know we have the leaders and dedication to make this happen!

The first edition of our Civiscope is out, so please read it and print copies for your members without email. The Civiscope contains lots of good information (including a very long Governor's update (sorry)). Eugene has done a great job putting the first Civiscope together and we should see another edition by the end of March.

The Winter District Board Meeting was held in Pensacola on Saturday, January 23rd. Let me just highlight some of the items discussed, and more information will be sent your way in the coming months...

The Region One Meeting in Vicksburg is February 26-28. Registration forms are still available - let me know if you need one. Room rates were guaranteed through Friday, so if you are thinking of attending this meeting, you need to make your reservation at the Battlefield Inn and submit your registration!

Our Spring District Meeting is Saturday, May 1st, in Monroeville. The meeting will begin at 10 am at the Vanity Fair Golf & Tennis Club. More information soon! We would like to have EVERY CLUB represented at this District Meeting. Please mark this date on your Civitan calendar and make plans to bring several members from your Club.

The National Leadership Forum is June 6-11th, at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. Mike Barrington has mailed information to your Club. Mike has a PowerPoint presentation on last year's trip and would be happy to attend a Club meeting to present a program on the Leadership Forum.

Governor-Elect James Jones is Chairman of a Committee to Review District Convention Costs. The committee will determine the proper budget for a convention and develop a format (checklist) for planning a convention that can be passed from one Convention Chair to the next, year to year. Committee members are: Judge Advocate Gene Autrey, Past Governor Director Bill Wall, Convention Chair Cindy Barrington, and Secretary/Treasurer Meg Smith. James hopes to have a report for the Spring District Meeting.

Has your Club contributed to the Dance-A-Thon? Please help out our District representative, Lexy Perez, Vice-President of the Pensacola High School Jr. Civitan Club. Information was sent to all Club Presidents. Lexy will be attending the Jr. Civitan Dance-A-Thon next month in Quebec, Canada.

Governor-Elect James Jones has just returned from the GE Academy in Birmingham! He is "fired up" and ready to assume his Governorship duties on 1 October 2010! James is looking for a Junior Civitan Chair for the Junior Civitan International Year that starts 1 July 2010. If you know someone who enjoys working with youth and you think would make a fine Junior Civitan Chair, please contact James.

Immediate Past Governor, Morgan Moore, emailed every Club President a copy of the John Simpson Scholarship application in January. Applications must be back to Morgan Moore by March 20th. The two winners (High School and College) will be announced at our Spring District Meeting on May 1st.

Thank you for your leadership, your support, and all you do each day for Civitan. YOU ROCK!

"Keep Charging" and Yours In Civitan, Jim
