Alexander City Civitan Club
Learn about our club

The Alexander City civitan Club has been supportive of a variety of projects and activities in the community since the club was chartered November 24, 1952.

Dedicated to the three major purposes of Civitan - fellowship, knowledge and service - members have contributred both time and money in the name of the club to charitable and youth-related activities throughout the years.

Civitan is the only major service club with headquarters in the South.  Since the 1930s Civitan International's major focus has been toward helping people with mental and physical disabilities; however,  local clubs also participate in service projects, based on the needs of their communities.  Our club has supported many local projects throughout the years, such as sponsoring a PONY League Baseball Team; fencing the league field and selling adds in support of their actsivities; sponsoring the Miss Lake Martin Pageant; working at and financially supporting the Girls Ranch; working at and financially supporting Camp ASCCA; supporting ARISE, the Boys and Girls Club, the Children's Home, Children's Harbor, Children's Library, the Rescue Squad, Tallapoosa Crises Center, Alzheimer's Foundation, HOSPICE, and the Sheriff's Department K9 Corps. We have built wheelchair ramps for the handicapped.   We have annually honored the clergy of our community with a special dinner and program.  Members of the club have been instrumental in building a camp for the mentally handicapped on Lake Martin near Dadeville.  In addition to donating funds to help build Camp Civitan, many members spent many man-hours developing the facility and serving on the governing board in many positions, including President.   The facility was donated to Camp ASCCA/Easter Seals, and continued to serve those who were mentally challenged until it was destroyed by the tornado that hit our area April 27, 2011.  We annually send youth of the community to a National Youth Leadership Forum held at Harding University in Searcy,  Arkansas.  We donate funds annually to Gateway to Education.  We now sponsor a Junior Civitan Cllub in Alexander City Middle and High Schools.  The club generously supports the Civitan Internatinal project, The Civitan International Research Center.  This facility researches the causes of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.  It was built by Civitans on the campus of UAB in Birmingham and is supported by Civitans, worldwide.

Many projects have been undertaken throughout the years to raise money to support the above service projects.  The club members have sold Lake Martin License Plates, sold Light Bulbs and Claxton Fruitcakes, manned a concession stand at Auburn University football games, had grocery give-aways, sold barbecue lunches, sold smoked  boston butts and turkey, had steak dinners and auctions, and sell mints at local restaurants.

The club has the distinction of being the only club in Civitan International to sponsor and charter four other Civitan Clubs in one day.  On April 6, 1971 the club chartered a Junior club in the Middle and High Schools in Alexander City, a collegiate club at Alexander City Junion College, and a senior club in Kellyton.

We remain a very active club in our community and are always looking for ways to make the Alexander City area a better place in which to love.
