The Civitan International Research Center(CIRC) is located on campus at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, AL.
 
 
CIRC research is the flagship activity of Civitan International fund raising projects & of Junior Civitan organizations throughout the World.
 
 
Research is focused on human mental (brain) development conditions. Results are shared World-wide as they occur.
 
 
Results of CIRC's research are applied in Spark's Hospitals and details of research and methods are widely disseminated in professional journals.
 
 
Professionals World-wide come to UAB to be trained in the latest techniques for improving the quality of life of mentally underdeveloped individuals

Encouraged the membership to join the general membership meeting of Tysons Civitan Club which meets at Clyde's Restaurant off Virginia Route 7 in Tyson's Corner, VA - because officers will be on travel to the Civitan International convention.

July 11 2006: 6:45 p.m.
No speaker tonight - met at the Arlington Community Center located on Lee Highway at Lexington Street (across from Charlies Horse Restaurant) to discuss alternative meeting locations and the upcoming Civitan International Convention to be held at the Marriott in the Renaissance Center in Detroit MI on July 26 through July 29th, 2006.

Discussion and sharing about Harrison L. Hinson - former long term member of the Arlington Club-formerly President of the McLean Civitan Club prior its merging with Civitan Club of Arlington, Virginia, Inc.

Speaker Jeannie Cummins from RPJ Housing (Robert Pierre Johnson) Housing Development Corp. & Cindy Stephens, Representative from Arlington County to present their program for developing and providing additional "affordable housing" in Arlington County.

Report from ISCC meeting by Linda M. Smith and Chris Wahl delegates who attended the 4/20 meeting (3rd Thursday of month) at the Salvation Army facility on Glebe Road in South Arlington.

Business Meeting pre-sale events beginning on April 1st - the beginning of 8-event community garage sale season.

 
 
Debbie Powers (Arlington County liaison) read and shared emails about "no selling" until 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning - forwarded ideas from Arlington County Police Department and Police Auxillary to control traffic and enforce the County's request for no sales over the eving period.

March 14, 2006: 6:45 p.m.
Speaker - Richard Wong, CEO of Gifts In Kind International. Richard explained the process of giving by their corporate clients to those having need - including massive amounts to the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita during the fall of 2005.

February 28, 2006: 6:45 p.m.
Speakers were Rosa Aquilino, Assistance Director of Development and Rebecca Hill, Director of Development for St. Colletta's of Alexandria, VA and Washington, D.C.

 
 
These are facilities who provide education for young mentally challenged individuals and provide evening school sessions for adults - a new facility is being developed in D.C. near the RFK Stadium to expand their services in the Washington, D.C area and are requesting contributions.

February 14 2006: 6:45 p.m.
A "special service" commemorating the service our "chaplains" provide in memory of the Four Chaplains serving on the USS Dorchester - on a troop ship during WWII loaded with soldiers that sank. Pat also related her recent chaplain experiences serving at the Columbia Fairfax Hospital.

January 24 2006: 6:45 p.m.
Presented five grantees awards of funds for their current fiscal operating period.

June 14, 2005: 6:45 p.m.
A "special recognition" program was held to honor four local high school students to receive "outstanding citizen" awards -atended by their family members

 
 
Grantees also attended this meeting from local charitable organizations who directly support the mentally challenged and underdeveloped individuals to receive grant award checks during this same meeting. The MC was OscarJ. Olson, Jr. (Immed. past president)

Area III Meeting - including members from the Arlington Club, Fairfax Club, Tysons Club, Springfield Proud Hearts Club, Leesburg Clubs will participate. Maribeth Jacobs - Area III leader will conduct the meeting

Preparatory meeting for Civitan International Convention in Greensboro, NC

Civitan International Annual Convention was held in Greensboro, NC at the Sheraton Hotel & Four Seasons Koury Convention Center. It was a great place to hold a convention!

Arlington Civitan delegates presented a report to the members & visitors, describing what occurred at the Convention at the Greensboro, NC event during previous week.

2005 February through May - Dinner Meetings & Programs:

February 8, 2005: 6:45 p.m.
Video Presentation - the Four Chaplains - A Sacrifice at Sea
A WWII story about a loaded troop ship in which ~900 U.S. Army troops interacted with one another through careful participation and guidance of their U.S. Army Chaplains. This is also our traditional "Neighborhood Clergy Appreciation Night".

This inter-action led to these soldiers accepting much greater tolerance toward one another within such a diverse population of soldiers kept in close quarters - getting ready for war. A "wolfpack of U-Boats torpedoed the Troop Ship "Dorchester" in the dark of night, creating conditions for massive chaos. The survivors told their story - presented in color with actual film footage shown in black & white.

February 11, 2005: 2:10 p.m.
Chartering Ceremony for the Thomas Jefferson Junior Civitan Club
A group of 24-Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology students formed an organization at TJHSST to adapt their special skills and talents to helping their community in ways of Civitan International. Chesapeake District officers Governor Edward Pyles and Governor Elect George Shumaker along with Patricia Koepsel (Club Builder) and sponsoring senior Civitan Club was represented by President David Wahl and President Elect Christine Wahl with Pat Groves, Advisor-Counselor witnessing the event.

February 22, 2005: 6:45 p.m.
Zack Fraser, Civitan Soccer, members of the Arlington Soccer League

Zack introduced the Civitan attendees to the Arlington Soccer League and told of the value of Civitan's contributions to provide opportunity for our youth. Zack related stories about the various Civitan teams and the age groups of the local youth (from Arlington and Falls Church) who not only learn to play soccer, but to learn teamwork and participate in team athletics.

February 22, 2005: 7:45 pm.
Three members from the Burke Lake Junior Civitan Club presented civitan members met the advisor Ryan Misler and two officers (Shawn Landsman and Stanley "G") of a growing junior Civitan group that is learning & performing community service work in their community.

A recipient for several years of Arlington Civitan grants will present their program as it assists mentally challenged and underdeveloped individuals in our community

Upcoming 2005 Arlington Community Garage Sale Events Coming Soon

The program will be preparatory to "kicking off" Civitan's "twentieth season" of sponsoring and administering the garage sale events. The first event begins April 2nd, 2005. The proceeds will benefit groups who work directly with the mentally challenged and undeveloped individuals and also to promote good citizenship and scholarships for the local youth.

Civitan International - Chesapeake District Spring Meeting held in Virginia Beach, VA

The event was held in the Ramada Inn Resort on the beach - guests were Mr. & Ms William C. Hiscott, Civitan International President (Canada) and Dr. Harald Sontheim, Ph.D. and recipient of a prestigous Chesapeake District Fellow Award; also attending were Dr. Mark Friedlander, Ph.D., CIRC Director and other colleagues from the University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB).

May 9, 2005: 6:45 p.m.
Civitans reported on the activities at the Civitan International Research Center (CIRC) located at the University of Alabama, Birmingham campus - a video report along with personal sharing of the facility by members who have visited CIRC.

May 24, 2005:
Election of Officers

Chris Wahl was elected to become the 2006 FY President; continuing from 2005 FY will be Doug Frazier, 2006 Vice President; Greg Pino, 2006 Treasurer and "Jack" Mueller, 2006 Secretary. These leaders will take office on October 1st 2005 for one year.

Civitans volunteered again to assist the ISCC (Arlington County Inter-service Club Council) to man their booth in July 2005 - during the Arlington County Fair - demonstrating what the service club/organizations purpose is; and to share who these organizations are.

Lt. Col. Sherman W. Pratt (Ret.)
Author of Arlington County Virginia: A Modern History, will give new insights into the fascinating history of our area.

Presented interesting stories about the War of 1812 that occurred in suburban MD and the capitol in Washington prior to the British forces joining up in the New Orleans, LA vicinity.

April 13, 2004: 6:45 p.m.
Sgt. Heather Hurlock,

Arlington Police Auxilliary, briefed group on guarding against identity theft. Heather provided handouts showing tips for protecting our identity from the unscrupulous.

April 27: 6:45 pm.
Senior students from local high schools will receive Civitan Citizenship Honor Awards at our annual program recognizing local youth. Honored guest will be the Governor of Civitan's Chesapeake District 10 - Fon Smith.

May 11, 2004: 6:45 p.m.
Business meeting and election of officers.

A slate of officers and directors was nominated, discussed and elected

May 25, 2004: 6:45 p.m.
Awarding checks to George Moore - representing Villa Maria; and Kathleen Doxee -representing TACTS (The Arlington Community Temporary Shelter to various local groups benefiting the developmentally disabled and the local youth.)

June 8, 2004: 6:45 p.m.
Dinner meeting consisted of identifying unmet needs in the Arlington County community with guests Jane Burr, Chief of the Crisis Assistance Bureau who provided an overview of the services available; and provided information to enable many more opportunities for the Arlington Civitan club to serve its community.

Connie Francis, Coordinator of the Dept. of Human Services Volunteer Services Program also offered additional opportunities for service that Arlington Civitan can provide.

June 22, 2004: 6:45 p.m.
Melissa Hays-Smith, LCSW; CEO/President of Easter Seals Virginia described new possibilities for partnership with Civitans in serving people with disabilities - with two camp locations; and are interested in developing adult day care programs in northern Virginia.
