Service

Civitans are dedicated to improving our community through helping others.  On an international level, Civitan funds the UABCivitanInternationalResearchCenter, a facility for research and treatment of developmental disabilities. On the local level, however, Civitans are involved in a variety of service projects to help residents in our area. Here are just a few of our club’s community service projects which you may choose to participate in:

     Fellowship

 

Fellowship is an important part of a growing, productive service club, and Civitan offers its members many opportunities to socialize, meet new friends, and network with business associates. Working together on club projects is fun, and there is always time to enjoy the company of other members at club meetings. Throughout the year, Civitan plans special events just for members and guests. Here is just a sample of some of Civitan’s fun activities:

Civitan Fast Facts

·Civitan was founded in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1917. Its founder and first president was Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire, a prominent Birmingham physician.

 

·Civitan International is a worldwide association of community service clubs, with members in dozens of countries working together to perform community service projects.

 

·Civitan provides opportunities for community involvement, personal development, networking, and leadership.

 

·On an international level, Civitan emphasizes helping people with developmental disabilities.  However, Civitan clubs perform a variety of service projects that address the unique needs of their communities.

 

·Civitan’s flagship project is the CivitanInternationalResearchCenter at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the first institution of its kind in the United States to be solely dedicated to the research of developmental disabilities.

 

·Civitan International’s world headquarters is located in Birmingham, Alabama, and provides numerous support services to clubs.

You can become a member of the Birmingham Civitan Club by completing a membership application and presenting it to any club officer. There is an initiation fee of $35, and club dues are $35 per quarter.

 

 

The Birmingham Civitan Club meets

Noon, 1st & 3rd Thursday of each month

at the Harbert Center

downtown Birmingham, AL
