• Civitan is an association of community service clubs.
• Civitan was founded in Birmingham, Al in 1919.
• Its founder and first president was Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire, a prominent Birmingham physician.
• Civitan's purpose is to provide opportunities for personal and proffesional developement while improving communities through community service.
• Civitan's flagship program is the UAB Civitan International Research Center, the first institution of its kind in the United States to be solely dedicated to research of developmental disabilities.

• The Civitan World Headquarters is located in Birmingham, Alabama.
• There ar approximately 40,000 members in clubs throughout the world.
• Our emphasis as an organization is to help people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities (MR/DD). However, Civitan Clubs are involved with a variety of community servise and fund-raising projects. |

It is the purpose of the Corpus Christi Civitan Club:
To build and promote good citizenship in this community by developing in the individual members of this club a lofty civic consciousness and civic pride; and an understanding of the value and power of united constructive effort in civic enterprises.
To increase the efficiency of its members by demanding of them the highest ethical and moral standards ion their respective vocations, and encouraging the adoption of the most improved methods and ideas in their business or profession.
To cooperate with other organizations of similar purposes.
In our local club you will find reflected the three major purposes of Civitan:
First in purpose is FELLOWSHIP. We are social beings and desire friendly relations with others. In Civitan you will associate with others of good character and noble purpose.
Second in purpose is KNOWLEDGE. This organization seeks to expand mental horizons. Our Creed cuts across barriers of bigotry and narrowness and fosters breadth and depth of understanding.
Third in purpose is SERVICE. Civitan was founded primarily as a service club. Its motto, its creed and its pledge are centered in service. |
