WHO ARE WE?
Civitans are everyday citizens, just like you and me, who come together in communities throughout the world to make life better for their neighbors through service, knowledge and fellowship.
The Charleston Civitan Club consists of members of all ages from a variety of backgrounds. Many are professionals who work full time, others are retired, and some join as families. Yet we share one common purpose…to give back to our communities through Civitan service. And we all enjoy the knowledge and fellowship that comes from Civitan membership! |

FAST FACTS ABOUT CIVITAN
- In 1975, Civitan International was the first service organization to voluntarily welcome women as equal members.
- Some famous Civitans have included Presidents John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Bill Clinton; U.S. Supreme Court Justices Hugo Black and Ed T. Sanford; inventor Thomas A. Edison; race car driver Richard Petty; and athlete Bo Jackson.
- “Civitan” comes from the Latin word “Civitas,” which means citizenship.
- The Charleston Civitan Club is home to two past Civitan International Presidents: Belford Roberts (1975-76) and Bill Rogers (1983-84)
- Civitan International was founded in 1917 in Birmingham, Alabama as an organization dedicated to serving individual and community needs, with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities. Today, Civitan has nearly 30,000 members in 24 countries around the world, including Europe, Asia and Africa.
- The Charleston Civitan Club has donated more than $450,000 to local and international charities since it was chartered on Nov. 24, 1925.
