Chattanooga Civitan Club, Inc. was chartered August 9, 1920, making us the third oldest club in International.
Chattanooga Civitan gives continuous service to our community. Our active members work diligently to help needy children in the Chattanooga area. Through various committees, our club is continuing to develop strong leadership not only for Civitan, but this community. |

Chattanooga Civitan was the home of two International Presidents, O.B. Andrews, 1922-23 (who authored the Civitan Creed), and Eugene J. Bryan, 1949-1950. Two International Chaplains also came from our club: Dr. James L. Fowle, 1970-71 and Dr. Jimmie M. Mankin, 1974-75.
Chattanooga Civitan promoted a bond issue to build T. C. Thompson Children's Hospital in 1926. T. C. Thompson was a charter member and our second club president, as well as a former mayor of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Chattanooga Civitan also developed a $500,000 Campaign to establish and equip the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit at T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital.
We established the Civitan Child Welfare Auxiliary in the early 1930's that aids needy and disabled children through a trust fund set up by the late Cassie Hutcheson. Currently the Auxiliary gives over $70,000 a year to meet some of the needs of these children.
In 2004, we were able to give $30,000 to T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital to complete their new "rooftop" garden. This is a special play area where the children can enjoy time outside and yet remain in a safe, controlled environment.
We currently have five fundraising projects to assist us in caring for the children in our community:
Summer Fling--- August
Fungolf Tournament---April
Fruitcake Auction---November
Adventures Book Sales---October through December
Candy Box Sales--year round
ALL of the proceeds from these events go to the organizations that we support here in the Chattanooga area. |

CIVITAN CREED by O.B. Andrews
I AM CIVITAN: as old as life, as young as the rainbow, as endless as time.
MY HANDS do the work of the world and reach out in service to others.
MY EARS hear the cry of children and the call throughout the world for peace, guidance, progress and unity.
MY EYES search for others to join in the fellowship and service of Civitan.
MY MOUTH utters the call to daily duty and speaks prayers in every tongue.
MY MIND teaches me respect for law and the flag of my country.
MY HEART beats for every friend, bleeds for every injury to humanity, and throbs with joy at every triumph of truth.
MY SOUL knows no fear but its own unworthiness.
MY HOPE is for a better world through Civitan.
MY MOTTO: builders of good citizenship.
MY BELIEF: do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
MY PLEDGE: to practice the Golden Rule and to build upon it a better and nobler citizenship. |
