Civitan International is a charitable and volunteer run organisation established in 1917  “To build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organisation of clubs dedicated to serving individuals and community needs, with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities” (Mission statement ).

It has offices in over 26 countries throughout the world including Sierra Leone.

The Sierra Leone Chapter was founded in 1994 with the determination to achieve the above mission.

However, the Africa office has focused itself on the promotion of Human Rights the   Rule Law, Good Governance, Human Trafficking, FGM, Natural Resource Management and Community Development through Education, Sensitisation, Capacity building training and others.

Since its inception, Civitan Africa has endeavoured to work across the West Africa countries especially in schools, vocational institutes and communities. Presently, we have offices in   Freetown , Sierra Leone, Accra Ghana, Lagos Nigeria ,Monrovia Liberia Abidjan Cote d’’Voire and Banjul The Gambia . In all these countries we have conducted meetings relating to Educational   Sensitisation Programmes including Good Governance, FGM, Community Development and the Rule of Law. In 2004, we established a vocational institution in Sierra Leone a town called Lunsar for capacitating the girl child education generally and Woman   in particular. The vocational institute presently provides learning opportunities for women and the girl child   in the Lunsar community. Civitan all over the world remain proud as one of the first serviceable organisation committed to promoting gender issues at all levels.

Civitan believes in democratic principles and we have been actively engaged in promoting the rule law and good governance in all aspects of our activities. Over the years of operation, the rank and file of Civitan have had series of trainings in various skills of group management and leadership. Results of the said training have greatly prepared the membership to engage in the discharge of nationalistic roles in all spheres of life.
