ABOUT CIVITAN INTERNATIONAL Civitan International was officially started in 1920 in Birmingham, Alabama. The motto adopted, and still in effect today, was "Builders of Good Citizenship." Througout it's growth, Civitan has welcomed into its fold numerous public figures including Presidents and sports celebrities. In 1974 Civitan became the first service organization of its kind to admit women. In 1992 Civitan also became the first service organization to have its own official research center, the Civitan International Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Civitan today has clubs from the Philippeans and Korea to Norway and Romania, and the organization continues to add new clubs in new countries every year. On an international level, Civitan is devoted to improving the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities. On the local level, Civitan Clubs around the world assist children and adults on many levels, not just those with developmental disabilities.
