The Dyersburg Civitan Club was organized March 13, 1953 by Mr. Western Grizzard from Clarksville, TN. Western had been hired by Civitan to contact local communities throughout western Tennessee with the object of promoting and organzing new Civitan clubs. Some of the charter members were Murray Pope, US Postal Clerk; Len Shipman, officer at Dyersburg Fabrics; Robert Wood, supervisor at Dyersburg Fabrics; W.L. Noble, Oil Distributer and W.J. Boyd,Presbyterian Minister. Rev. Boyd's brother-in-law, Eddie Lunn, was a Civitan International President and was also instrumental in leading Boyd and the others to form the local club. The Dyersburg Civitan Club elected Eddie to the International Presidency. Wendell West was delegated to attend the International Convention in Hot Springs , AR and was the last"official" registered delegate to the convention. Eddie Lunn won by one vote. Wendell has gone on to serve as both Lt. Governor and Governor of the Valley District. He is also credited with chartering the first Junior Civitan Club west of the Tennessee River. Our membership has ranged from 45 to our current 35, highly active , members. Our longest continuing member is Lloyd Collier who has been a member since 1968 and has served in many different capacities in the club. Lloyd is currently a trustee of The Civitan Valley District Foundation. |
