In 2009 the Dyersburg Civitan Club in partnership with United Cerebral Palsy of Nashville began building wheelchair ramps for individuals with disabilities. The materials for each ramp built are paid for by Tennessee Housing Development Agency as part of the statewide Home Access Program. Each ramp recipient must meet specific criteria specified by the State of Tennessee in order to qualify for funds and the Dyersburg Civitan Club has been authorized through UCP Nashville to act as the qualifying agent for our area in Northwest Tennessee. The club has built one ramp in Martin, TN, however our main focus is to meet the needs of individuals residing in Dyer County. Each ramp is built using a standardized design and materials that meet Dyer County building codes, which are then custom fit to each recipient’s location. Construction is accomplished in stages with base sections and decking made inn advance offsite and transported to the construction site when needed. A typical ramp requires two days of on site work to be completed. Civitan volunteers donate their labor and other resources to construct each ramp. So far we’ve built 18 ramps, check out our Civitan Photo Gallery page for pictures of completed ramps. Individuals who have a need for a ramp can contact Dan Felkner at 731-334-0240, Jeff Jackson at 731-445-3484 or Russ Maher at 731-334-1168 to start the qualification process. Truly a labor of love , Dyersburg Civitans feel blessed that we can be of help to our neighbors in need. |
