| The El Monte/Arcadia Area Civitan Club |
 |
The El Monte/Arcadia Area Civitan Club is a group of civic-minded men and women who have an interest in bettering the Arcadia and El Monte communities and in supporting the Civitan Internatonal principles of Fellowship, Knowledge and Service. We do this through a variety of activities designed to raise money to support such "hands-on" projects as assisting with the assembly of food baskets for El Monte Emergency Resources, officiating at Special Olympics, miniature golf tournament for youth, and sponsoring the Arcadia Civitan Track Meet
Civitan, a worldwide community service organization, was founded in 1917 in Birmingham, Alabama. Civitan International was established three years later in 1920.
The name Civitan is taken from the Latin word "Civitas" which means "citizenship". Civitan's motto is "Builders of good Citizenship."
In 1974 Civitan became the first previously all-male service organization to welcome women as equal members.
Since the 1930's, Civitan International's major focus has been toward helping people with developmental disabilities; however local clubs are involved in a variety of community service projects, based on the needs of their communities.
Civitan's most recognized fund-raising project is the Civitan Candy Box Project. Serviced solely by volunteers, 100 percent of the net proceeds of the project go to benefit people with developmental disabilities locally and internationally. |
