Civitan International is a more than 90 year old worldwide community service organization whose membership is open to all adults 18 of age and older. The "cornerstones" of Civitan are Service, Knowledge and Fellowship. Since the 1930's Civitan International's major focus has been helping people with developmental disabilities. Civitan's most widely recognized fund-raising programs in the United States are the Civitan Candy and Coin Box Projects. Serviced by volunteers, 100 percent of the projects' net proceeds benefit those with developmental disabilities. Through its Candy and Coin Box Projects, Civitan funds the Civitan International Research Center, a research and treatment facility for developmental disabilities, at The University of Alabama in Birmingham. |
