My Sister For Now and My Friend Forever
Having an exchange student living with with my family had never crossed my mind until this year. One of my mom's co-workers had suggested that we should host a foreign exchange student. I thought this would be cool having a girl my age living with me who would be just like a sister. I couldn't wait for her to come. I wanted to teach her all kinds of things, one of those being softball. She had never played before other than in gym class. We had talked about her playing on my team and how it would be a great experience for her. She agreed and when the weather was nice I took her to the park to practice. I won't lie, she wasn't the greatest, but with a little more practice she got better.
When we finally had practice with the team she suprised everyone on how well she actually did - even me.

Getting ready for the season
I decided to become an exchange student to learn about language and the culture. I wanted to learn about everything and that meant trying - trying the different kinds of food, trying to talk in English the whole time and trying to live a different lifestyle.
And I noticed that trying was the key to understand another culture.
Amy showed me “her” America and what it means to her. She was like a sister from the beginning on.
One day she showed me Softball. We went to the park and I “tried” it. I played once in my gym class in Germany before, but we played without rules, and that was about two years ago. So Softball was something “new” for me.
Of course I didn’t do well the first time, but we practiced a couple times, and I got better. Then we had our first practice with the team. I was excited and scared at the same time, because I worried I would do very badly and people would laugh at me. In fact I did okay and even Amy was a little bit proud of me. I am looking forward to the next practice, because for the first game on May 1, I will need much more skills. Softball seems like fun to me and maybe one day I will be as good as Amy, a real “professional” who has played since she was little. At least in my dreams…
