Program: Weaver Street Market and the Hillsborough Community Jason Baker, owner services coordinator with Weaver Street Market (all stores) Weaver Street opened its first grocery 21 years ago in 1988 in Carrboro and has grown to 3 including stores in Southern Village and Hillsborough. It is unique as a local grocery in several ways: · It is locally owned and cannot sell shares outside North Carolina. It has three types of ownership: owner worker, owners and consumer owners. A consumer owner makes an investment in the community. Pay $75 one time or $135 if a two-adult household. You are buying one share for a lifetime; can benefit from weekly owner special\; have ability to cash checks; get a t-shirt, reusable shopping bag, coupons and a discount at the cash register. · It buys its food locally and has little waste. It also has a Food House in Hillsborough where the food is cooked/prepped and where meat is processed. · The board has determined several ways the cooperative can give out its profit: - donate to a nonprofit
- Rainy day fund
- Improvement of the coop
- Return profit to owners as a dividend
· Each food section manager has a profit margin that it tries to meet. They try to keep pricing competitive by checking with other groceries and comparing individual products. Treasurer Report Paula Brown reported that we have more than $2000 in the bank. Fundraiser Update · Candy Boxes – Richard Gross placed boxes at new sites of Cup a Joe and Dual Hardware. · Poinsettia Sales – Rick Stephens and Jane Hart offered to volunteer when we sell poinsettias the weekend of the craft show at the Big Barn.
