Civitan, a worldwide community service organization, was founded in 1917 by a small group of businessmen who began meeting weekly to discuss how they could improve their community.  Civitan International was established three years later in 1920.  The name Civitan is taken from the Latin word Civitas which means citizenship. Civitan's Motto is Builders of Good Citizenship.  The Lakewood Civitan Club was chartered in Huntsville, Alabama in 1966.  Initially its members were all male, but today there are both men and women.  In fact the club president for 2006 - 2007 was a woman and the club won an award as Outstanding Club in The District.  We strive to make life in MadisonCounty better especially for people with developmental disabilities.  Our normal meeting time and place is 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month at the Holiday Inn located across from the Von Braun Civic Center.
