The Little Rock Civitan Club

Projects & Events

The Little Rock Civitan Club is deeply involved in the community. Many worthwhile community service projects are conducted each year and new ones are always welcomed when the club members find a need to be fulfilled.

As you will see below, many of the club's projects include those that benefit the goals of the Civitan International Organization and Civitan Research Center. Take a moment to read some of these great things the Little Rock Club participates in:

Arkansas Summer Special Olympics
Track and field events for Arkansas Special Olympians are held annually on the campus of Harding University at Searcy. Volunteers from the Little Rock Club have traditionally operated the running long jump event.

Basketball Skills Competition
As a division of the Arkansas Special Olympics program, the Basketball Skills Competition is annually sponsored, organized and operated by Little Rock Civitan Club and the Little Rock Central High School Junior Civitan Club. Over 200 Special Olympic athletes from across the State of Arkansas take part in skill events that include passing, dribbling and shooting basketballs. Medals and ribbons are awarded, and a meal is served. Everyone, including Civitans and Junior Civitans, leaves proud of after the event!

Candy Box Project
Candy Boxes became a Civitan International fund-raising project in 1976. Civitans place candy boxes filled with peppermint candies in businesses and restaurants. Individuals are encouraged to drop a few coins in the box as they pick up a mint. Twenty-five percent of collections are used locally to benefit the developmentally disabled, and the remaining proceeds benefit the Civitan International Research Center on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Candy boxes play a critical role in Civitan Internationalıs pledge to contribute $1 million per year for 20 years to the Research Center.

Clergy Appreciation Week
Each year, the Little Rock Civitans pause to say thank you to the clergy of the Little Rock community. Clergy Appreciation Week is a significant event throughout North America. The efforts of Civitan clubs to show appreciation to the clergy of all faiths is appreciated by both the local community and the clergy you honor on this special occasion.

The idea for Clergy week is to help promote world brotherhood and religious understanding among all people, regardless of religious persuasion. It is a time when we can reflect upon our individual religious beliefs and to promote an understanding and acceptance of the rights of others to participate in a religion different from our own.

The story of the four Chaplains was the inspiration behind the annual event. In 2003, Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Larry Barber addressed the LR Civitans: Click here for Full Story

Fruit Cake Project
Civitan International has close to a 50-year association with Claxton Bakery in Claxton, Ga. Members around the world sell fruit cake during the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday season. A portion of the proceeds remain with the local club; another portion funds the operation of the Civitan International organization, headquartered in Birmingham, Ala.

"Hap-Pea" New Year Black-eyed Peas Sales
The Ozark District of Civitan International has teamed up with the Civitan
Center in Benton which serves children and adults with developmental
disabilities. Our club purchases the peas ‹ packaged in attractive burlap
bags by adult clients of the center ‹ and sells them prior to the New Yearıs holiday. Sales proceeds are shared by the Ozark District and our club.

Little Rock Zoo/Wild Night Under the Stars
Little Rock Civitans have a 50-year partnership with the Little Rock Zoo.
Over the years, LR Civitans have purchased animals, furnished the first
Kiddie Zoo exhibit, purchased and installed the kiddie train, built and
equipped the animal nursery and contributed to various improvement projects. In 1998, LR Civitans made the single largest donation to the zoo ($100,000) to help fund construction of the Civitan Amphitheater. In 2000, Civitans were major backers of development of the new African Veldt area. The first Wild Night Under the Stars, a major communitywide fund-raising dinner and silent auction, was held in 2001, with proceeds shared by the Zoo and LR Civitan.

Noel Don McGuire Memorial Award
The Little Rock club presents this award annually to the top graduate rookie cadet in the Little Rock Police Department. The award is given in memory of LR police officer Noel Don McGuire, who was killed in the line of duty in May 1980. He had been No. 1 in his Police Academy class. His father, Noel McGuire, is a past president of the Little Rock Civitan Club.

Rainbow of Love
Participants in a variety of summer youth activity programs throughout the city are invited to enjoy a day of bowling, pizza and fun. Many of the
participants are "at-risk" youth. The event is designed as a safe and fun
summer activity that involves and impacts the youth in a positive way.
Prizes are awarded. Civitans seek businesses and individuals to serve as underwriting sponsors for the event.

War Memorial Concessions
The Little Rock Civitan Club has operated a food concession stand at War Memorial Stadium for Razorback football games and other events for 20 years. The club receives 10-15 percent of sales generated. Proceeds are used to support various projects of LR Civitan.
