June 7th, 2008, saw another successful event! same location, same process, but this time we took our own BBQ which worked much better than struggling to light charcoal. June 2, 2007, dawned bright and sunny, but not too warm. We started rolling in to East Park Gardens at around 8am, to find that some anxious players are arriving already! Setup starts, and we are ready to start registering golfers and putting them into teams by 8:30. Each golfer received a shirt again this year, and we had them pick sports team names for identification purposes. Just before 9:00, Stephanie from Community Living Leisure Programme called out the team name and helper's name(s) and assigned which hole the teams would start at, for 18 holes of mini golf. Civitan Gerald blew the whistle, and we were off... Some of the golfers are old pros at this, some have never played before ~ but all have a great time. Each hole is limited to 6 minutes, then on to the next. The helper is responsible for keeping things running smoothly, making sure each player gets their turn, and keeping score. Of course, there are volunteers running around with cameras, and the usual antics happen! While the players are doing the rounds, another crew of volunteers is busy firing up the barbeque, getting hot dogs, hamburgs, chips, pop, and water all ready to go. By 11:00am we are off the course, scorecards handed in and meal tickets received. Off to the food lineup. After everyone eats, the Master of Ceremonies Stephanie and Civitan Dot, make an announcement thanking the management of East Park for allowing us to use their facility year after year. Without them, this event could not happen. Prizes are given for: - most holes in one - low score, male and female - most honest golfer, male and female - low team score - most honest team then each team is called up to take a prize from the prize table. Donated prizes ranged from shirts to hats to calculators to pens to water bottles to games, and so on. Each player was able to pick their own prizes. Thanks to Past Governor Val & Owen for coming to London for the weekend to help out. Thanks also to the volunteers who helped make the day a success, and to all the hole sponsors who help offset the costs involved. We couldn't do it without you!! Finally, thanks to Mother Nature for holding off on the thunder storms until after we were done. |
