Civitan was founded in Birmingham, Alabama on March 17, 1917 when a group of business and professional men began meeting and discussing how they could join together to support their community's involvement in World War I. The name "Civitan" was selected for their club. This comes from the Latin word "Civitas", which means citizenship. Their club was centered around three basic ideals; Service, Knowledge, and Fellowship.
Service
Civitans are dedicated to improving their communities through helping others. On the international level, Civitan funds the Civitan International Research Center, a center for research and treatment of mental retardation and other developmental disabilities.

Locally, Civitans are involved in a great number of community service projects. Some of those projects are listed below.

Knowledge
Civitans seek to be more informed about their communities and improve themselves through lifelong learning. The Marietta Civitan Club offers informative, educational, and entertaining programs at each dinner meeting. A few of the recent club programs have included:

Clergy Appreciation Meeting
Local, State, and National health issues
Local historical information
Local ecological presentations

Fellowship
Fellowship is an important part of a growing, productive service club, and Civitan offers its members many opportunities to socialize, meet new friends, and network with business associates. Some fellowship activities include:

Spouse's Banquets
Christmas Parties
Working on Service Projects and Fundraisers
