Marietta Civitan, JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2012 newsletter now available online. Click on Newsletter button.
Civitan was founded in Birmingham, Alabama on March 17, 1917 when a group of business and professional men began meeting and discussing how they could join together to support their community's involvement in World War I. The name "Civitan" was selected for their club. This comes from the Latin word "Civitas", which means citizenship. Their club was centered around three basic ideals; Service, Knowledge, and Fellowship. |
 |
Service
Civitans are dedicated to improving their communities through helping others. On the international level, Civitan funds the Civitan International Research Center, a center for research and treatment of mental retardation and other developmental disabilities.
Locally, Civitans are involved in a great number of community service projects. Some of those projects are listed below.
| | High School Scholarships | | | Adopt-A-Highway | | | O'Neil Senior Citizens Center | | | Easter Seals | | | Ewing School for the Handicapped | | | Local and State Special Olympics | | | Washington County Home |

Knowledge
