WHAT IS CIVITAN?
The word CIVITAN is a coined word that comes from the Latin word "CIVITAS", which means CITIZENSHIP.
|
 |
The three principals of Civitan are Service, Knowledge and Fellowship. Civitan is a worldwide, all volunteer, non-profit, service organization where men and women have an organized way of approaching local community problems through service and fund raising. We emphasize serving people with mental and physical disabilities, youth, senior citizens and the community. Local clubs are supported by Civitan International, which was organized in 1917 and now spans over 21 countries. The Civitan International Research Center is researching ways to prevent and cure Developmental Disabilities, Alzheimers and brain tumors. For more information, visit www.civitan.org.

We are a hands-on, working organization that does charitable service for the developmentally challenged, the underprivileged, and the needy. We also make charitable gifts to the needy. To make it possible to provide those charitable gifts and to provide some of the charitable services, we have fundraisers. We also support our research center, which is on the University of Alabama campus at Birmingham (See the many research projects at www.circ.uab.edu/research.htm). If you leave us now, please remember how to return to this site.
If you would like to give back to the community, Civitan is a great opportunity to do just that. Come join us. We need you so that we can do more, and at the same time you will feel good about yourself.
