Civitan International Research Center

Culminating nearly 50 years of helping people challenged by mental disabilities, Civitan International Foundation members awarded a grant of 20 million dollars to The University of Alabama at Birmingham to support development of the Civitan International Research Center. This generous act by Civitan made it possible for exceptional human, financial, and technical resources to focus on developmental disabilities.

Through interdisciplinary research, clinical services, and community programs, the Civitan International Research Center improves the lives of people at risk for, or affected by developmental disabilities. The Center conducts research on the development of the central nervous system, with special emphasis on human development, developmental disabilities, and
mental disabilities. Center programs focus on three broad-based areas: clinical neurosciences, developmental neurobiology, and human development and social ecology.
