For more than 20 years, Civitan Candy Boxes have been the backbone of our fund-raising activities in the United States and Canada to help people with disabilities. Income from Candy Boxes was the basis for the $20 million commitment our organization made to create the Civitan International Research Center in 1992. Because Civitan volunteers place and maintain the boxes, all resulting income, above the direct costs of materials, actually goes to charitable activities. In comparison, most other countertop solicitations provide 10 percent or less to the charities they purport to help, sometimes as little a $1 a month, no matter how much is collected. |

Clubs get boxes and candy free from Civitan and keep 25 percent of the money collected for their charitable projects. The balance is sent to the Foundation Headquarters where expenses are paid, leaving approximately 28 percent for the Foundation. Unfortunately, decisions by restaurant corporate managers, declining Civitan membership, and increasing competition from other countertop solicitations has resulted in the project becoming less profitable in each of the past four years.
Participating in the Candy Box project is one of the most important fundraising activities a Civitan can undertake. Participation by a large percentage of our membership is critical to the continued success of this important program.
