Sunny skies, warm temperatures and hot, hot, hot putting and racing made the spring district meeting a big success for the Civitan International Research Center. The meeting centered around a putt putt tournament which is South Carolina's version of the Breakthru Golf Benefit. Over 2500 dollars was raised by Civitans who participated. The funds will help our Governor meet his fundraising goal for the Breakthru event this summer in Ottawa. Clubs that wish to support the effort can still do so. Send you contribution to the district office. All contributions will count toward Civitan at the Helm recognition.
A big thanks goes to Frankie's Fun Park for donating the miniature golf course and the go kart race course for the fund raiser.
Also highlighting the meeting was an address by South Carolina Special Olympics President Barry Coats. Barry talked about plans for the World Games which will be held in Ireland this summer. Twenty nine athletes from South Carolina will travel to Ireland to compete. Civitan Clubs can help these athletes by providing donations toward travel expenses. Total expenses for the SC team will be about $100,000. Contributions can be sent to the district office.
We were also honored to have Curtis Farlow, Region II Director, attend the meeting and participate in the putt putt event and report international activities. A plan for restructuring Civitan districts and regions has been debated hotly during the past year. Revised plans will be presented at the convention in Ottawa.

| Giant Candy Box is Highlight of Christmas Parade |
 |
Civitans from across the district worked to build a super size candy box for the Christmas Parade in Columbia, December 7, 2002. Designed by Governor Bill Rentz and towed by Bryan Bobo, the float featured living Civitan mints including members of the Rock Hill Club and Special Olympians from South Carolina who will be participating in the 2003 World Games in Ireland. A big thank you goes to all the Civitans that helped to prepare the candy box float for the parade. There are more pictures of the float on the picture page.
After the parade, Civitans gathered at the Babcock Center for the winter district meeting featuring a Wise Bar-b-que lunch and reports about fruitcake sales, the candy box program and Junior Civitan.
