Our club's mission statement is: "To build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities." To achieve our mission, we volunteer our time and talent with several organizations, including the Special Olympics (county, area, and state) and Angel's Unaware group homes for the profoundly disabled. We promote citizenship and volunteerism in the youth of our community by sponsoring Junior Civitan Clubs. We have sponsored clubs at Jefferson, King, Alonso, and Sickles High Schools over the years...and welcomed in the Junior Civitan Club at Leto High School in November 2009. We recognize the contributions of others, and have done so since 1927, with our club's prestigious Tampa Metro Civitan Club's Outstanding Citizen of the Year award, presented to a remarkable Tampa citizen who has volunteered their TIME and TALENT to better our community. And Tampa Metro Civitan is not just a local club! Our club is part of Civitan International, a worldwide association of community service clubs with members in 30+ countries -- all devoted to improving the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities. Together, all Civitan clubs support our local communities and our flagship program: the UAB Civitan International Research Center (UAB CIRC), created in 1990 as the first institution in the US dedicated to the research of intellectual and developmental disabilities and to provide clinical services designed to improve the quality of life and well-being of affected children, adults, and their families. Research at the UAB CIRC now includes "a wide range of research projects looking at the brain's mysteries and numerous disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and post traumatic stress syndrome, as well as numerous other disorders and diseases of the brain" including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Rhett's Syndrome; video. UAB CIRC scientists are also reponsible for "groundbreaking work on the treatment of gliomas, an aggressive form of brain cancer, with a form of scorpion toxin"; video. Quotes and videos curtosy of UAB CIRC Streaming Videos website; please visit the site for additional information on research, news and videos.
