Hello, Tampa Metro Civitans. 

I wanted to provide everyone with an update on Leto High School’s Junior Civitan.  The group participated in its first club meeting Monday.  Fourteen young ladies and one young man participated in the meeting.  The group is mostly seniors currently, but I believe that once our name gets out and is heard consistently on the morning announcements more students will be interested.   We brainstormed projects we would like to work on this school year.  I am excited about the group’s energy and enthusiasm….they are ready to work!

We have already started working on our first service project.  The group decided on a blanket drive for the homeless.  As a group the members decided that each of them would be responsible for collecting five items of their own. We are asking for the student population to help by donating new or used (clean) blankets, comforters, and sleeping bags.  We have already started making announcements through our morning show and will have banners and posters throughout the school starting tomorrow.  We are also working on producing a short slide show with photos of homeless and statistics to air on our morning show to bring additional attention to the drive.

I am asking for your help in making this drive successful.  I have told the members that we would be working with all of you on upcoming projects and that we can count on you to help us. We have not set an overall goal yet, but I want the group to feel successful in their first effort.  It will provide them the incentive to keep going.  PLEASE check your closets for new or used (clean & good condition) blankets, comforters, and sleeping bags you no longer use.  Check with your family members and neighbors, as well.  A person living on the street during the winter season could use what you no longer do.  Our goal date is December 15^th. 

I will be attending the first December meeting on December 7^th.  I would love to drive to school on Tuesday with a truckload of warm blankets to contribute to the group’s drive.  Please help us in our efforts.
